Subject: Please Support the Social Democrats’ Motion to Abolish the Means Test for Carers

Dear Deputy,

I am writing to you as a constituent and as someone deeply concerned about the treatment of family carers in Ireland.

On Wednesday, the Social Democrats will bring forward a motion calling for the abolition of the means test for Carer’s Allowance. I am asking you to support this motion.

Family carers provide essential care that saves the State billions every year, yet many are left struggling financially and emotionally. The current means test is punitive and unfair. It penalises families who are already stretched to their limits, and it fails to recognise the true value of care.

Caring is not a lifestyle choice. It is work, relentless and vital, that allows our loved ones to live with dignity. By abolishing the means test, we can begin to show carers the respect and security they deserve.

Supporting this motion is an opportunity to stand up for carers in our communities, including families like mine. It is about recognising that no one should be pushed into poverty for providing the care the State depends upon.

I urge you to vote in favour of this motion and to use your platform to speak out in support of carers.
